NOTES ON MILITIA LISTS

Northamptonshire Militia Lists survive for the years 1762, 1771, 1774, 1777, 1781 and 1786 and are held at the Northamptonshire Record Office.
They not are not complete in any year. The best survival rate is 1777 when all hundreds but Navisford (The Soke of Peterborough) survive.
For 1786 lists survive for only 3 of the 20 hundreds, Nobottle Grove, Spelhoe and Wymersley.
1777 lists were published by the Northamptonshire Record Society in 1973 and used copies are often available to purchase.
Nassaburgh Hundred survives only for 1762, this too has been published by the Northamptonshire Record Society.
The Militia Lists contain the names of able bodied men aged 18-45 years who were eligible to serve in the militia. Northamptonshire was expected to provide 640 men.
There were exemptions - peers of the realm, clergymen, apprentices, seamen and parish constables, also poor men with 3 or more children and those who were deemed unfit or had been drawn or served before were exempted.
